2017 Schedule and Handbook

We thank Payne & Co for sponsoring the printing of our Handbook and Newsletter

FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Welcome to the Limpsfield, Oxted and District Horticultural Society handbook for 2017. In these times of change it is good to know that gardening and horticulture can provide some certainty throughout the year.
There is growing evidence that gardening is good for you both by keeping you active and engaged but also relieving some of the stress and anxiety that living in the modern age can bring. So we should encourage as many people as we can to become involved even if it is only growing a pot of herbs on the kitchen window sill.
Looking back over 2016 some of the highlights were our plant sale in May. With the plant sale I am always worried that we won’t have enough plants to sell or the no one will come and the whole event will be a flop and we will not make any money. But come the day and come the plants and the visitors until the hall is buzzing with activity. Then there were our talks, with Simon Charlesworth talking about growing lavender and winning prizes at Chelsea Flower Show. In May Sarah Rogers came to talk to us about the restoration of Riverhill Himalayan Gardens. Our regular events like the daffodil and compost competitions were a success as were our one off ‘pop-up events’ during the year and we will be running them again in 2017.
For me the big event was our ‘Celebration of Local Gardening’ in July. Given the success of the Celebration in 2016 we have decided to run this event again on 8 July. Your committee have been working hard over the winter to put together the programme of speakers for 2017. We are also planning a visit to Quex House and Garden on Wednesday 14 June.
As last year I would like to thank all the members of the committee for their help and support during 2016. Without their continuing involvement and enthusiasm we would not be able to run the society, but we also need the support of our members to keep this society going.
Wishing you all a good gardening year for 2017.
RICHARD MEAKIN
